How to Remove a Watermark From a PDF by Selecting the Area

Sometimes a watermark cannot be found and deleted, because it is part of the page picture. Scanned documents, flattened exports and screenshots saved as PDF all work this way. For those files, the practical option is to cover the watermark area with a matching colour. This guide explains how the Manual mode of OnlyPDF's watermark remove tool works, when it gives a clean result, and when it will not.

Only remove watermarks from documents you have the right to edit. A watermark can carry copyright or ownership information.

Try Smart mode first

Before drawing anything, check whether the watermark is a separate object. When you upload a file, the tool scans it automatically. If it finds semi-transparent text, a logo layer, a stamp or a tagged watermark, the Smart tab opens and you can delete it outright, with a Before and After preview. Deleting is cleaner than covering, because nothing is painted over the page.

If the scan finds nothing, the tool opens the Manual tab and says so. That is your cue that the mark is part of the image.

How Manual mode works

Manual mode shows a preview of the page. You drag a box over the watermark, and in the downloaded copy that area is covered with a solid colour. It does not rebuild what was underneath. It hides it, which explains both its strengths and its limits.

Step by step

  • Upload your PDF and wait for the page preview.
  • Drag over the watermark to draw a box. Move it by dragging, and resize it from the corners.
  • Add more boxes if the watermark appears in several places.
  • Choose which pages each box applies to: all pages, this page, odd or even pages, or a range.
  • Check the cover colour, turn on the cover preview, and adjust if needed.
  • Download the cleaned PDF.

If you slip, use Undo and Redo, or press Delete to remove the selected box.

Choosing the cover colour

The default is Match background, which samples the colour in a thin ring around each box. On white paper that gives white, and on a light blue or cream page it gives a matching tint, so the patch does not stand out. You can also pick white, choose a custom colour, or use Pick from page and tap the exact shade you want.

When it works well

  • The watermark sits in a predictable spot, such as a corner logo or a footer stamp.
  • The background around it is plain or a single even colour.
  • The area you cover contains no text or image you need.

When it will not work well

  • Diagonal watermarks across the middle of a text page. Covering them also covers the words underneath.
  • Watermarks over photos, gradients or patterned backgrounds. A flat cover is visible there.
  • Watermarks that overlap a signature, stamp or figure you need to keep.

Always review the result. A cover hides everything in its area, so check that no needed content disappeared along with the watermark.

Getting the best result on a phone

The page preview supports zoom and a Pan mode, so you can zoom in, place the box precisely, then switch to Pan to move around without drawing by accident. The box corners have large touch handles for resizing with a finger.

Getting the best result in general

  • Draw the box close to the watermark, with a small margin so no faint edge is left.
  • Use the same box on every page only when the watermark really is in the same place each time.
  • For a watermark that appears on some pages only, use a page range or work box by box.
  • Zoom in on the finished file at the edges of each covered area.

Reviewing the result

Open the cleaned file and check that the watermark is gone, that no visible patch stands out against a coloured background, and that no nearby text was hidden. If something looks wrong, go back to your original and draw a tighter box or choose a different cover colour.

Alternatives worth considering

  • Ask for a clean copy. The author or sender can often supply one without the watermark.
  • Recreate the page from the source file if you have it, and export a fresh PDF.
  • For scanned pages you will reuse, retake or rescan the page without the mark.

Frequently asked questions

Does this remove every type of watermark?

No. Smart mode deletes watermarks that are separate objects, and Manual mode covers a chosen area. A watermark placed over important content cannot be cleanly separated from it.

Can I preview the result before downloading?

Yes. Smart mode has a Before and After preview, and Manual mode can show the cover on the page before you download.

Is the covered content really removed?

No. A manual cover hides the area, and the original content may still be in the file. Do not use it to hide sensitive information.

Is my original file changed?

No. The tool creates a new cleaned copy for download and leaves your original where it is.
